Dr David Tadj - Practice Principal

MBBS (Qld), FRACGP, DRANZCOG, FARGP

David is a practice principal at Pioneer Health. He has trained in obstetrics (including caesarean sections) and has a special interest in this area. His other interests include preventative medicine, mental health, chronic fatigue and skin cancer surgery. David is active in teaching medical students and junior doctors and is often accompanied by junior doctors during consultations at the practice. David is married and has a teenage son. In his spare time, he enjoys fishing, reading and cooking. He also speaks fluent German. David works most days apart from when he is working at the hospital or consulting in Mt Barker. 

Dr James Turner - Practice Principal

MBBS (UWA), FRACGP, DCH

James joined Pioneer Health in 2007. He enjoys the variety of medicine in the surgery as well as looking after hospital patients. Special interests include skin cancer medicine and dermatology, children's health, aboriginal health and chronic disease management. James is involved in GP registrar training and is the chair of the WAGPET supervisor liaison group. Outside of medicine, James enjoys spending time with his wife and 3 children, gardening and running a male acapella group known as the King George Sounds. James works most days at the practice, which includes running a skin check clinic once a week. 

DR AIRELL HODGKINSON

MBBS, FRACGP, FARGP, DTM&H, DCH, JCCA

Airell joined the practice in January 2006 after spending the previous 4 years in the north of WA in Karratha and Kununurra. His medical experience includes anaesthetics, paediatrics, travel/tropical medicine and aviation medicals. Airell is also a member of Australian Society of Aerospace Medicine and has a keen interest in aviation. As a procedural rural GP, his time is divided between general practice and critical care/anaesthetics in Albany, Esperance, Katanning and Merredin.  

DR TANIA BOTHA

MBChB, FRACGP

Tania qualified in Pretoria,South Africa in 1990. She emigrated with her family to Mount Barker in 2002 where she worked for 7 years before starting at Pioneer Health.She enjoys all aspects of general practice but has a special interest in mental health (all ages) and aged care. Tania and her husband have 4 children.She enjoys gardening ,reading and bushwalking. Tania works most days and visits Bethel aged care facility on alternate weeks and consults weekly at Headspace. 

DR ANDREW KNIGHT

MBBS, FRACGP

Andrew is a University of Adelaide medical graduate who has spent more than 25 years working in rural and remote towns in SA, NT and WA. He has completed postgraduate training in obstetrics, paediatrics, musculoskeletal medicine and medical education. He also has special interests in dermatology, diabetes, mental health, aboriginal health and pain medicine. He is fortunate to have 3 daughters (number 2 and 3 are identical twins) and enjoys the company of a male Labradoodle called Charlie. Andrew has interests in music, books and outdoor adventuring.

Dr Christine Oosterhuis

MBBS (Hons), FRACGP, FARGP, JCCA, MPH&TM, DCH

Christine is a WA-trained GP who has been with Pioneer Health since 2009. Christine has particular interests in Child and Adolescent Health, Women's Health including contraception and fertility, Travel/tropical Medicine (eg. travel vaccinations), and Occupational Medicine. She also works at Albany Health Campus in the Emergency Department. Christine lives in Albany with her husband and two young daughters. Outside of work Christine enjoys spending time with her family, playing percussion in the Albany City Wind Ensemble, and exploring our incredible Great Southern region. Christine works part-time on Mondays and Fridays.

Dr Carly Roxburgh

MBBS, B Med Sci (Hons), FRACGP, DRANZCOG (Adv), DCH

Carly is a GP obstetrician, who provides woman-centred pregnancy care including pre-conception planning, antenatal care, birth and postnatal care. She delivers babies at Albany Health Campus and has advanced skills including caesarian birth and neonatal care. Other interests include lactation (breastfeeding), newborn health and child health. She also teaches student doctors at the Rural Clinical School of WA. Carly has lived in Albany since 2011. She enjoys spending free time with her children and husband, bush walking, camping and trying out as many kinds of arts and crafts as she can.

Dr Nigel Baker

MBBS, BSc, Grad Dip Ed, MSc

Nigel completed his medical degree at UWA in 2010 after spending 10 years as a science teacher working at various schools in WA. Nigel practices all aspects of rural general medicine and thoroughly enjoys helping and caring for his patients.  He is passionate about ensuring his patients feel safe, comfortable and supported whilst under his care.. 

Dr Nyi Zaw

MBBS, JCCA, FRACGP

Nyi has been with the Pioneer Team since 2011. He has successfully completed his GP specialist and Anaesthesia training. Nyi has special interests in rural general practice, men's health, chronic diseases management, anaesthesia and emergency medicine.  He shares his time between Pioneer Health and Albany Health Campus. Away from his work, Nyi is a happily married father of one who keeps himself fit by playing football and taking his dog for long walks.

Dr Don Gunning

MBBS, FACRRM, FRACGP

A West Australian graduate, Don has been with Pioneer since 2012. He worked for 12 years in Wagin as a solo GP up till 2000 and was involved in the early years of the rural doctor’s movement. He then spent 11 years in the N/East of the UK [County Durham] working as a GP in the NHS. Don has a wide interest in medicine, having been a family practitioner for 30 years now. He is developing an interest in minor surgery, dermatology and counselling, as well as being part of the pioneer team working in the Albany Health Campus. He intends to stay in Albany until retirement. Don works most days apart from when he is at the hospital doing ward rounds.

Dr John Rowlands

MBBS/BA (Medicine & Linguistics degrees, UWA), Fellow of the Royal Australian College of General Practice, International Diploma of Dermoscopy, Advanced Clinical Certificate of Skin Cancer Medicine and Surgery, Advanced Member of the Australian Institute of Dermatology, Accredited Skin Cancer Doctor.

John is a local Western Australian graduate who has completed his fellowship in General Practice and a number of advanced courses in dermatology, skin microscopy and skin surgery. His special interest is dermatology, including skin cancer identification and treatment, as well as the diagnosis and treatment of significant skin rashes with immune modifiers and phototherapy.  He is the medical educator running the training program for General Practitioners in the Great Southern region, and is an instructor for the Australian Resuscitation Council's Advanced Life Support courses.  Outside medicine, he enjoys spending time with his wife and young boys, gardening, and strength training.  

Dr Christel Smit-Kroner

MBBS, FACRRM, GCAHM

Christel is a medical graduate from The Netherlands. After specialising in third world medicine and working in Southern Africa, she moved to Australia with her husband and young family in 2006. For the past decade she has worked in rural NSW, and is now a rural generalist and Fellow of the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine, as well as a Rural Clinical School Medical Educator. Christel loves all aspects of general practice, including Aboriginal Health. Christel has received a postgraduate certificate in Farmer Health and Safety from the National Centre for Farmer Health. She takes a special interest in chronic disease management and health problems relating to ageing.

Dr Jolmer Smit

MBBS, FACRRM

Jolmer is a medical graduate from The Netherlands. After specialising in third world medicine and working in Southern Africa, he moved to Australia with his young family in 2006. He worked in rural NSW for the last decade and is now a rural generalist and fellow of the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine. He has spent two years driving around Australia with his wife Christel and their 5 children to look for the perfect spot to settle. Albany has become the final destination and after working here for three years now, they love every bit of it.  Jolmer is a true generalist, however his special interests are skin cancer management, emergency medicine and chronic disease management. He visits Clarance Estate Nursing home weekly to look after the residence there and has a regular shift in the emergency department. In his spare time, Jolmer enjoys growing, rearing and collecting his own food, cooking, snorkeling, diving and fishing.

Dr Will Macdonald

MBBS (Hons), BApp, Sci(Hons), PhD, DCH, FARCGP

Will studied medicine at UWA and graduated in 2013, specialising in rural and remote medicine. He moved to Albany not long afterwards and has since worked at both Pioneer Health and the Albany Heath Campus. Before studying medicine he worked as a medical researcher and academic at Australian and European Universities. Will’s special interests include emergency medicine, paediatrics and men’s health. Outside of medicine Will’s interests include playing football (soccer), fishing and gardening. Will and his wife have settled into a property in the Albany region, which they share with an array of furry friends. Will currently works on Mondays and Tuesdays at Pioneer Health and also works at Albany Health Campus.

Dr Keerthana Muthurangan

MBBS

Keerthana is orginally from India where she first studied medicine in Chennai. After graduating in 2007, she started working in Mt Isa, Queensland in 2012 after working few years in India. She also worked in Brisbane at Prince Charles hospital, and more recently at King Edward Memorial Hospital in Perth, where she focused on obstetrics and antenatal care. Her medical interests include children's health, obstetrics and geriatrics. Out of the practice, she thoroughly enjoys dancing the tango and salsa, cooking and spending time with her family.

Dr Yen Lo

MBBS, DCH, DRANZCOG (adv)

Yen is originally from Malaysia and undertook her medical studies at UWA. She also speaks Mandarin and Cantonese. Yen has worked in Royal Perth Hospital and more recently at King Edward Memorial Hospital where she completed her GP Obstetrics training.  She also has a special interest in children's health. Outside of medicine she enjoys gardening and knitting.

Dr James Teh

James studied medicine at the University of Western Australia graduating in 2012. He enjoys country medicine and has previously worked in Kalgoorlie Hospital and more recently in Esperance. His medical interests include emergency medicine and chronic disease management. Outside of medicine he enjoys cycling, travelling and trekking.

Dr Georgina Stevenson

MBBS(hons), FRACGP, FARGP, DCH, Cert EM (ACEM)

Georgina is a local UWA medical school graduate (2011) who completed her GP specialty training in rural/remote WA and Far North Queensland. She has done extra training in paediatrics (diploma of child health) and emergency medicine (ACEM certificate and FARGP). She has special interests in rural medicine, women's health, aboriginal health, emergency medicine and renal medicine. She will be working between Pioneer Health and the Albany Hospital emergency department. Away from medicine, Georgina enjoys hiking, netball and exploring the local area. Georgina is excited to call Albany home now. 

Dr Richie Graham

MB BCh BAO

Richie is originally from Ireland where he studied Medicine in Dublin. Having graduated in 2011 and completed his intern year in Ireland he moved to Perth where he worked at Joondalup Health Campus and Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital. He most recently worked at the Royal Darwin Hospital where he focused on Emergency Medicine. His medical interests include emergency medicine and generalist practice. In his spare time Richie enjoys running, camping, travelling, snorkelling, and trekking. 

Dr Sourabh Joshi

MBBS, DRANZCOG

Sourabh graduated from UWA medical school in 2012. He completed part of his intern year in Albany and worked in hospital before returning to Perth to gain experience in various specialties. He has worked in Fiona Stanley Hospital and more recently at King Edward Memorial Hospital focusing on obstetrics, antenatal care and perinatal mental health. He has completed a post-graduate diploma in Obstetrics & Gynaecology (DRANZCOG) and is currently undertaking study in children's health through the Sydney Child Health Program. In his spare time, Sourabh enjoys swing dancing, rock climbing and scuba diving.

Dr Janelle de Graaf

MBBS, EMC

Janelle graduated from UWA Medical School in 2014 specialising in Rural Medicine. After graduating she worked at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital and Joondalup Health Campus obtaining an Emergency Certificate and Emergency Diploma. Her medical interests include emergency medicine, children's health and obstetrics (in which she is currently completing a diploma). After growing up in Bunbury she fell in love with Albany as a place to settle with her family. She enjoys bush walks, running by the beach and spending time with her husband and little girl.

Ligia Galvez

MBBS, FRACGP, DRANZCOG, DCH

Ligia has been in practicing medicine in the Mount Barker community for over 10 years. She has an interest in womens and childrens health, and more recently medical acupuncture. In her free time Dr Galvez is with her family, exercising or coaching junior Swimming at the local pool. The Currently practices at Pioneer Health on Thursdays.
